What Can Be Accomplished by Growing Your Own Food

I am a history buff and I love reading about things that have happened that most of us never hear about in the glossed over history books we read in school.  One of the themes that I keep running into has to do with food sources and the introduction of different types and kinds of food and what that introduction did to literally thousands of native peoples around the globe.

This has brought up several questions and the fist is why allergies are so prevalent in our children in America today?  When my kids were young I never heard about all the food allergies, especially peanuts that I hear about today.  Also alarming are the skin conditions these children have.  I have thought long and hard as to why this is and the only thing that makes since to me are the chemicals our kids are exposed to through food sources as well as airborne.

When you really think about it, we are ALL exposed to these chemicals and it’s time we are aware that we have choices about what kind of food to put in our bodies.  When we purchase foods that have been processed, take a look on the box and see how many ingredients are there that you have never heard of or can’t pronounce.  Some of them are crazy!  Other ingredients are outlawed in other countries yet allowed in mass here in the US.  The one that comes to mind is corn syrup.

So what can we do to correct this food mess that has wracked our country and the health of its citizens?  It’s a simple fix.  No, really, it is to live and eat simply.  To look at what’s in the box and stick to those things that contain only one thing; oats, peanuts, etc., and to become aware of what’s in the box or bottle you are purchasing.

If you live in a place where you can either garden in an in ground garden, raised vegetable garden, greenhouse or combination, then grow your own food.  This is the only way you will know what has been sprayed on your fruits and vegetables and to know for sure that you have naturally organic foods.

How much money you will save will depend upon the climate you live in and what you currently have as far as garden, raised beds, a greenhouse, etc.  You may want to invest in a greenhouse instead of a garden in order to produce food year round or, if you live in a very mild climate, a garden will do for a year round harvest.

Whatever you do, remember you will either be part of the solution or part of the problem.  It is up to all of us to send a loud message to those in charge of our food and water source that we want clean natural food.  If you can’t buy that at the store for a decent price, you can grow it at home.  It is easy to do and you can find help on the internet, at the library and in your community.  Do it now!
