Things to do to Save Energy in Our Homes are sometimes so obvious, that we miss them. We have all heard since childhood, “shut the light off if you are not in the room”, “Close the refrigerator door”, “Close the door, are we heating the outdoors?” We have all heard these comments, but how many of us have actually understood and listened?
Little things mean a lot. Take a shorter shower. Only a few minutes each day will make a significant difference in a year’s time.
Think of the air conditioner as an emergency device. Do not turn it on and leave it just because the calendar says that it is the right time. Choose a temperature at which you will use it, and stick to it. After all, there are plenty of other ways to cool off.
Think of household heating as the necessity that it is. Most of us enjoy the Bahamas or any tropical island, but if we do not live there, we truly do not require this amount of warmth year round. Turn the heat down a couple of notches. Wear warm socks and a sweater. Encourage your children to do the same. Trust me, this will not hurt, but rather help them.
Consolidate your errands. Instead of grocery shopping on Saturday, do it Friday afternoon while dropping the kids off at soccer. Start a carpool. It may sound cliché’ and overdone, but it helps a lot. Imagine one car on the road, instead of five or six…
Employ human energy… Walk.
Always choose energy efficient appliances. They may sometimes cost more to begin with, but they always save in the end.
Change every light bulb in your house to energy efficient. The amount of energy that is saved each year multiplied by every family is astounding.
Little things truly do mean a lot. Even the smallest, almost unnoticeable changes can bring about huge energy savings. The Things to do to Save Energy in Our Homes do not need to be enormous or life altering, as long as we all do our part.
