The tax credits are designed and put in place to help the consumer choose the most efficient products on the market. They are inspected and assured to be money saving products, as well as being environmentally friendly. The credits are easy to understand, and the products are easy to find for purchase.
Although they are fairly easy to understand, the credits have some rules and regulations. Most of the programs are designed to help homeowners lower their heating and cooling expenses, therefore, most of the time rental properties are not eligible for the tax credit. They also have an expiration date, so the sooner the recommendations are used, the better the chances the tax credit will apply.
A credit of 30 percent (up to $1500) will be given on certain products used in the home. This does not include new homes and rentals, so the products are really considered upgrades. It also has to be a primary residence and second homes do not qualify. The tax credit is given when a homeowner purchase certain types of heating and cooling system, insulation, roofing and more. It has an expiration date of December 31, 2010.
There is a tax credit of 30 percent that is offered for new construction and second homes. This program has no limit and can be applied with the purchase of geothermal heat pumps, energy producing wind mills, and solar systems. Rentals do not quality and it expires on December 31, 2016.
Another credit is offered to the owners of new or existing homes. It must be a primary residence and it offers 30 percent of cost and has a limit of $500 per 5 kW of power capacity. This program expires on December 31, 2016 and rentals or second homes to not quality. This credit is applied when the homeowner installs fuel cells.
